Eating Disorder DVD Review: Perfect Body
Andy, the girl in the movie, is excited for having given the opportunity to train as a a gymnist and is to compete in the olympics. However, her journey was far from ideal. She developed an eating disorder because of the pressures. Her first training session had started off badly. She was weighed infront of the whole class and critisised for being "overweight".
Soon, Andy began starving herself and exercising compulsively as she became obsessed with the idea that this is the best way to achieve success. What she did not realise was that her eating disorder would worsen and have an impact on her relationships with her boyfriend, friends and parents. Andy had to learn that she needed to stop punishing her body before it went too far.
It was a good performance put up by Amy Jo Johnson. Her character transformed from a happy and healthy teenager to one who became increasingly sickly and pale. The gymnastic sequences are beautiful. But what is important is the underlying important message to all teenagers, gymnasts or just about anyone in danger of developing an eating disorder: it is not wise to change one's appearance just to fit into and conform to societal pressures at the expense of one's health.
